Garissa University Institute of Peace and Security Studies (GaU IPSS) was established in January 2020 at University’s main campus with support from Frontier Counties Development Council (FCDC) to professionalize and promote peace, security and conflict resolution mechanisms within the region and beyond.

Vision Statement

To be a globally recognized centre of excellence that provides quality training, research, innovation, consultancy and community outreach to addresses societal needs on peace, security and conflict management for sustainable growth and development in the drylands of the region and beyond.

Mission Statement

To lead, professionalize and nurture talents on peace, security and conflict management through quality training, research, innovation, consultancy and community outreach to meet the sustainable growth and development needs of the society.

 Purpose

Enhance professionalism and capacities of students, communities and stakeholders on peace, security and conflict management in the drylands of Kenya, the region and beyond for mutual co-existence and sustainable development.

Objectives

  • Capacity build society on peace, security and conflict management
  • Enhance research-extension-community/stakeholder networking and linkages
  • Execute peace, security and conflict management studies in the region
  • Domesticate innovative policies and laws for FCDC and the region, and address complexities  related to porous and cross border issues
  • Strengthen customary structures and bylaws for peaceful co-existence and sustainable management of the environment and natural resources
  • Capacity build sexperts on environmental impact assessment as a tool for conflict management
  • Promote adaptation and mitigation to climate change issues that build peace and resolves conflicts
  • Support initiatives on peace building, security & conflict management in the region
  • Promote right based approaches for peace building in the region
  • Build a regional database on peace, security and conflict management.
